What is Udyam registration and why does GeM need it?
Udyam Registration is the government's official recognition of a business as a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise. GeM requires a valid Udyam certificate to activate MSE benefits — price preference, EMD exemption and tender reservations. It's free, online at udyamregistration.gov.in, and takes 10–15 minutes with a valid PAN and Aadhaar.
What is Udyam
Udyam is the MSME Ministry's classification system introduced in 2020, replacing the older Udyog Aadhaar. It categorises businesses as Micro (investment up to ₹1 cr and turnover up to ₹5 cr), Small (up to ₹10 cr / ₹50 cr) or Medium (up to ₹50 cr / ₹250 cr).
Why GeM needs it
Every MSE benefit on GeM — price preference, EMD exemption, reservation on tenders below ₹200 crore, women-owned and SC/ST sub-quotas — is tied to a valid Udyam certificate. No Udyam = you bid as a general (unreserved) seller and lose the entire policy advantage.
How to register
Go to udyamregistration.gov.in → 'For New Entrepreneurs'. Enter your Aadhaar, verify with OTP, enter PAN, then business details (turnover, investment, activity codes). The system auto-pulls turnover from your GST and PAN data. Certificate is issued instantly with a lifetime Udyam Registration Number (URN).
Keeping it valid
Udyam updates automatically each financial year based on your latest ITR and GST returns. If your business grows out of MSE thresholds, GeM benefits are withdrawn — plan for that transition.
Common mistakes
Registering with a mobile number not linked to Aadhaar (blocks OTP), wrong NIC activity codes (limits tender categories you can qualify for), and missing the women-owned or SC/ST declaration during registration (blocks sub-quota benefits).
